Biography

I was born in Iowa and received my early training at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.  While pursuing degrees in music and theatre, I was fortunate enough to study ballet with Françoise Martinet who brought her old colleagues from the Joffrey Ballet to the University for a two-month residency every summer.  Through her, I also got to walk out onstage with the Dance Theatre of Harlem in The Firebird when they came on tour.  Let's just say it's a good thing that I act and sing even if I can stand next to real dancers in tights – or at least I could then!

I'm a strong believer in the creation of new works for the theatre, and have been part of several premiere productions. Among other new shows, You Never Can Tell!! was written with me in mind and I received my Equity card for playing the evil usurping King in The Little Lame Prince.  (I previously had my SAG card for doing a national commercial for Reebok.)  I'm particularly proud of the number of companies that have engaged me for more than one production.  More than anything, I think that shows I'm reliable and a good colleague – (and talented!)

Although I've done a lot of straight theatre and film, my forte is musical theatre.  I always get high marks from critics and audiences for my ability to create a nuanced performance and the way I blend text and music.  (see Reviews)  I guess that’s why I can do straight theatre and in particular have no problem with Shakespearian verse.  You just have to hear each character's heartbeat and the “music” the playwright has written for him.
